Gorham Community Learning Center Curriculum Goals and Objectives:
The Gorham Community Learning Center’s Goals and Objectives are integrated into our classroom environment, themes and daily activities.
To learn concepts in a developmentally appropriate manner including problem solving, thinking and questioning, literacy development, and math and science concepts.
To develop positive social/emotional skills including developing friendships, expressing feelings, developing empathy, building self-esteem, and using manners. It also includes respecting personal boundaries, peer problem solving, using appropriate language and treating others how they want to be treated.
To develop gross and fine motor skills including balance, cutting, drawing, eye-hand coordination, muscle tone, exploring sensory materials and learning about the importance of daily exercise.
To understand and celebrate diversity including encouraging individuality, understanding differences and similarities, incorporating cultural (family) traditions, and inclusion of all children.
To develop pride in themselves and their family, this includes learning about different family structures, and opportunities families to become involved.
To communicate effectively through language development, peer interactions, and adult/child interactions.
To develop a sense of community through community projects, field trips, and guest speakers. To develop a sense of community and responsibility within the classroom and through dramatic play opportunities.
To practice good personal hygiene and self help skills by encouraging proper hand washing and toileting procedures, learning how to reduce the sharing of germs, and developmentally appropriate dressing and undressing.
To learn age appropriate safety practices including proper use of equipment, personal safety strategies (stranger danger), and general safety practices (fire safety, street safety). This also includes following classroom rules.
To develop an awareness of nutrition by encouraging healthy food choices, participating in nutrition activities and by providing an introduction to the food pyramid.
To learn how to care for the environment including recycling, conserving our natural resources and reducing pollution.
